Top Gay Icons
Hollywood is filled with celebrities who just don’t have the courage to be who they really are. When you’re in the public eye all the time, it’s a tendency to try to hide your true self. Still, when it comes to the LGBT group, there’s nothing more inspiring than a public figure who comes out and stands up for what he or she believes in. These are the top gay icons for the year 2014.
The petite beauty made a stirring speech about what it’s like to hide behind a fake persona every single day of her public life. But after coming out at the Las Vegas Human Rights Campaign inaugural conference, she has now become one of the top gay icons who is proud of who she truly is. And just to prove that sexual orientation doesn’t have to be a hindrance to success, she’s got tons of critically acclaimed hits such as Juno, Inception, and the latest X-Men movie under her belt.
Sir Ian McKellen
“Anyone in public life who comes out, comes out primarily for themselves, and their life is immediately improved. That’s what happened to me,” he says in an interview. Sir Ian McKellen not only dished out epic magic in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but he also waved around metal like it was a strand of hair in the X-Men Trilogy. Is he legendary in all his roles? Yes. Is he even more amazing as an openly gay celebrity and a top gay icon in real life? Definitely. “I often thought my gravestone would say, ‘Here lies Gandalf. He came out.’ Those are two of the proudest achievements that I’ve got.”

If we’re talking about iconic charisma, this woman’s got loads of it. From her hilarious personality to her generous heart, Ellen DeGeneres knows what it’s like to be yourself and proud of it. Happily in love with her wife Portia de Rossi, she shows everyone that being gay gives you just as much right to be married like everyone else. She entertains audiences the world over on her talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and, via a forgetful blue fish, she taught us that in life, we should all “just keep swimming.”
Neil Patrick Harris
As if Dr. Doogie isn’t influential enough, Neil Patrick Harris made an earth-shattering impact as Barney Stinson, womanizer extraordinaire of all-time awesomeness in the hit TV series How I Met Your Mother. In the show, he snags women like a pro and changes up his routine like a person changes clothes, but in real life, NPH influences people by being loud and proud of his sexual orientation. As one of the top gay icons now, he proves his pure talent on stage with his amazing musical performances, as well as shows us how a great father he can be with his husband, David Burtka. The lovely couple has twins, and they can’t be happier!
