Aside from being totally nice all the time, Canadians are also immensely talented. Beg to differ? Celine Dion and Bryan Adams are living testaments to their performing expertise. Heck, even Justin Bieber has hordes of fans screaming his name each time he goes on stage. Do you think you know where your favorite stars come from? Here’s a rundown of some of the most popular celebrities from Canada.
Comical, charismatic, and can play both a pet detective and a green-skinned hater of Christmas perfectly? It’s none other than Jim Carrey, beloved funnyman and hilarious legend. Once Canadian-born but became Americanized in 2004, he is best known for his facial expressions that no other actor can even hope to achieve. Still, his roles in The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind have also proven that he can bust a dramatic scene or two when the situation calls for it.
Speaking of funny, Mike Myers is also one of the most hysterical celebrities from Canada. Born in Scarborough, Ontario, he began his career on Saturday Night Live. After 6 seasons there, he later moved on to the epic Wayne’s World and Austin Powers movies, continuing to make the country laugh with his own brand of quirks.
The beautiful and elegant Rachel McAdams hailed from London, Ontario, Canada. Despite being a nice person in real life, she became a breakout star for her nasty role as the queen bee in the comedy, Mean Girls. She then switched to a tearjerker role in The Notebook opposite Ryan Gosling. Since then, she has expanded her roles and has shown her acting prowess through thrillers, dramas, comedies and romances, and there’s definitely no stopping her now.
The Juno star was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she began to study acting at an early age. Known for her roles in Christopher Nolan’s Inception and as the pivotal Kitty Pryde in the X-Men movies, she has also recently announced that she is coming out of the closet as a proud gay woman. Talk about one of the bravest celebrities from Canada.
With more than 50 years of experience on screen, this famous celebrity has come a long way from once working as a teenage camp counselor at Camp B’nai Brith in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec. Fans of the U.S.S. Enterprise know him as Captain James T. Kirk, but he eventually moved on to other projects such as The Practice and Boston Legal.
As someone who played a teeny-bopper Canadian child star singing about Canada in How I Met Your Mother, Cobie Smulders is actually one of the celebrities from Canada in real life. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, she became most famous for her role as Robin Scherbatsky. She is now known for her kick-ass abilities as Maria Hill, which she plays in the films The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Avengers: Age of Ultron. She also reprises this role in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series.
The 2014 Style Icon award winner Coco Rocha was born in Toronto, Ontario, and grew up in Richmond, British Columbia. Coco Rocha is currently one of the world’s most famous top models. Since her debut in 2004, Rocha has been the face of dozens of campaigns for iconic brands such as Yves Saint-Laurent, Chanel and Dior.
She has also been a great activist defending the rights of models for a safe working environment. In 2011 she appeared on Anderson Cooper‘s daytime television show Anderson, where she said models are scouted too young and put under pressure to stay thin and behave unnaturally, while they are “still minors”. In an email to the Associated Press she wrote that “fashion’s aesthetic should enhance and beautify the human form, not destroy it.”
